Many factors such as aging, hormonal changes and a family history of baldness can cause hair loss. The earlier the hair loss begins, the faster the baldness will develop. Hair loss may also occur after burns and traumas, in this case the surgical intervention is for reconstructive purposes and the costs can be covered by the health insurance. If you and your doctor decide that hair transplant is the most appropriate choice for you, you can have peace of mind. Because this procedure has been successfully performed by plastic surgeons for more than 20 years. If you are considering a hair transplant, this article aims to provide you with basic information about possible interventions.

Facts about hair loss

Poor scalp nutrition, vitamin deficiencies, dandruff and even wearing a hat for too long have been blamed for the development of hair loss and baldness.

Important points in hair transplant

Hair transplantation improves your appearance and increases your self-confidence, but the results may not always be as you ideal. Before deciding on a surgical intervention, you should think carefully and re-evaluate the situation with your doctor. Patients who are candidates for hair transplantation should have healthy hair on the back and sides of their heads to be used as a donor area. Other factors such as hair color, degree of hardness, wavy and curly also affect the outcome of the intervention. There are few techniques in hair transplantation. Sometimes two or more techniques are used in combination to get the best results. Transplantation techniques such as punch graft, mini graft, micro graft, slit graft and strip graft are generally used in patients who want smaller interventions. Techniques such as flaps, tissue expansion and scalp reduction should be applied to patients who want more dramatic changes. However, it should not be forgotten that what can be done is sometimes limited. It should be kept in mind that surgery is not a suitable option for patients with very little hair.

Hair loss in women

Approximately one out of every 5 women experiences hair loss due to old age, illness and hormonal changes after menopause. There is no patchy shedding in women as in men. On the contrary, a widespread shedding and thinning occurs in the entire scalp. To overcome this problem, some women use wigs or hairpiece-style accessories. Others use some drugs applied superficially to the hair. The effects of these drugs vary from person to person, but they generally prevent hair loss without stimulating new hair growth. In particular, mini-grafts are a good option for these patients to plump the areas with thinning hair. As the donor area, the back of the head, where the hair strands are denser, should be used. Flaps and tissue expansion procedures can be used in patients with excessive hair loss. If you are considering a surgical intervention for your hair, you should remember that this procedure does not prevent hair loss, but provides a more natural and fuller vision in the thinned areas. There are some risks in all surgical procedures... Hair transplantation is a safe procedure if it is performed by a trained and experienced doctor. However, the result can never be fully determined due to variable characteristics such as the persons hair characteristics, physical reactions and healing capacity. Like other surgical procedures, infection may occur here. Expansion of the suture scar due to reasons such as excessive bleeding and/or excessive tension of the suture line may eventually result in some scalp reduction procedures. There may be some loss of grafts taken in transplantation techniques. In addition, while the hair in the graft area starts to grow again, it is natural that the hair falls out for a certain period of time. In patients with too much loss, the surgical procedure can be repeated. In some patients, hair loss may be permanent in very small areas in the transplant area over time. These areas can often be hidden by surrounding hair. Post-surgical hair loss continues progressively, especially if an unnatural appearance occurs in the new hairline area, additional surgical intervention may be required.

When planning surgery

Hair transplantation and transplantation is a process in which the technique to be chosen varies depending on the person. Therefore, when choosing your doctor, you should choose a doctor who is experienced in tissue expansion and flaps as well as in transplantation techniques and knows which type of surgical intervention may be more suitable for you. If your doctor says that he can only do one of these techniques, you should go to someone who is more experienced in this field. In the first examination, your doctor will evaluate the growth characteristics of your hair, the degree of hair loss, family history of hair loss, and whether you have had a surgical treatment before. He or she will also talk to you about your lifestyle and possible outcomes and expectations after surgery. Medical conditions such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, coagulation disorders or a tendency to excessive scar formation in the body that may cause problems during or after surgery are also evaluated by your doctor before the surgery. If you smoke or take medications such as aspirin that may affect bleeding, you should inform your doctor. If you decide to have a surgical intervention, your doctor will inform you about the type of anesthesia to be performed, how the surgical procedure will be performed, its risks and results. If you have any questions about this, you should not hesitate to ask your doctor. In the pre-operative period, you should be sure about which procedure will be applied and how long it will take. You should also discuss with your doctor how you will look after grafts or other procedures.

Preparation for surgery

In the pre-surgery period, your doctor will tell you how to prepare, what to eat and drink, smoking and medications you should take or stop. If you follow these recommendations carefully, the results will be more pleasing for you. If you are a smoker, it is recommended to quit at least 1-2 weeks before surgery. Because smoking negatively affects your healing by reducing blood flow to the skin.

Type of anesthesia

Hair transplantation is usually performed under sedation under local anesthesia to make you feel more comfortable and relaxed. After your skin becomes numb, you do not feel pain, but you can feel the pressure and pulling forces during the procedure. It is performed in more complex procedures such as general anesthesia, tissue expansion and flaps. In this case, you will be asleep during the entire operation and you will not feel anything.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SURGICAL INTERVENTION

Hair transplantation is the removal of small pieces of scalp from a donor area and transporting it to a balding or sparse area. Grafts can be of different sizes and shapes. Round-shaped punch grafts contain approximately 10-15 hairs. Smaller minigrafts contain 2-4 hairs. Slit grafts, which are placed in strips to shape the scalp, contain approximately 10 hairs. Strip grafts are longer and thinner and contain about 30-40 hairs. Usually, surgical interventions may need to be repeated for a successful outcome, and it may take months for recovery between each session. In cases where all the hair is transplanted, this can take up to two years. The color and quality of the hair also affect the outcome of the surgical intervention. A better result is obtained in thick and light-colored hair than in dark-colored hair. The number of hair follicles taken in the first surgery varies according to the individual, but is approximately 50. In minigrafts and micrografts, this number can increase to 700 for each cure. Before surgery, the hair in the donor area is shortened for easier placement in the recipient area. For punch grafts, your doctor may use a special tube-like instrument made of sharp carbon steel. With this, he takes the grafts from the donor area and places them on the hairline, usually in the frontal region. In other types of grafts, they are taken from the hairy areas with the help of a scalpel and divided into small and thin pieces. In order to create more skin tension, serum ?saline- is injected periodically to the area where the grafts are taken. In punch grafts, the donor site is closed with sutures. One suture is sufficient for each punch graft area. In other graft types, a thin scar may remain. Stitches can be hidden by the hair around them. For the first time, the grafts are placed at intervals of 1/8 of an inch to ensure the healthy nourishment of the scalp. In the later stages, the spaces in between are filled. Your doctor takes the grafts with great care in order not to damage the donor area and places them in accordance with the natural growth direction of the hair while placing them. After the grafting process is completed, the scalp is cleaned and covered with clean gas covers. A pressure bandage can be used for a day or two. Some doctors may discharge their patients without using a bandage. Tissue expansion is an area in which plastic surgeons are experts in this field and is used for reconstructive purposes, especially in burns and in cases where there is a significant amount of tissue loss in the scalp. With the use of this technique, very good results are obtained in a relatively short time. In this technique, a balloon-like substance called tissue expander is placed under the skin on a hairy area adjacent to the balding areas and inflated with a serum containing salt water at regular intervals. This leads to the enlargement of the hairy area and the formation of new hair. In general, approximately two months after the first operation, there is sufficient tissue expansion and with a second operation, this balloon is removed and the enlarged scalp is advanced to the balding area.

Flap surgery

Flap surgery has been applied successfully for more than 20 years. With this method, bald areas are covered with scalp in a very short time. The width and placement of the flaps are determined according to the needs and wishes of the patient. One flap carries hair equivalent to 350 or more punch grafts. In this technique, a piece of the hairless area is removed and the area carrying the scalp is moved towards the place of the removed area. The resulting scar can be hidden by the surrounding hair. In recent years, very successful results have been obtained by combining flap surgery with tissue expansion or scalp reduction techniques. Thus, more scalp is obtained and a more natural hairline is created. Reducing the scalp: This technique is sometimes called as an advancement flap. Because the part that is removed from the scalp is closed by advancing the surrounding scalp. This technique is especially suitable for hair loss on the top and back. It is not useful in creating the frontal hairline. After local anesthesia is applied to the scalp, a part of the balding skin is removed. The size and shape of the removed part varies according to the patients expectation. If a large piece needs to be removed, an inverted Y-shaped incision is preferred. The shape of the extruded part may be U-shaped, oval-shaped or other shapes. In order to close the place of the removed part, the surrounding hairy tissue is loosened and advanced and closed with sutures. In the meantime, you may feel some tension and some pain at that point.

AFTER SURGERY

Depending on the size and complexity of the surgical procedure, what you feel after the surgery changes. Pain due to tension or surgery can be easily eliminated with painkillers. If a bandage is used, it is usually removed after the first day. You can wash your hair very gently two days after the surgery. Your stitches will be removed between a week and 10 days. If you have complaints such as discharge, itching or redness during this period, you should consult your doctor. Since the blood flow to the scalp will increase after strenuous activities, bleeding may occur in the transplanted or transplanted areas or in your suture line, so you should avoid strenuous exercises for 3 weeks. Some doctors also do not recommend sexual activity until 10 days after surgery. You can be sure that your incisions will heal quickly. During this period, especially in the first month, your doctor will call you for control at various intervals. What you need to do is not to neglect the recommended things and not to disrupt the controls.

RETURN TO NORMAL HAIR DEVELOPMENT

Many patients who have had a hair transplant see with horror that their transplanted hair has been shed about 6 weeks after the surgery. It should be noted that this is normal and is almost always temporary. After the hair is shed, it will take 5-6 weeks for the hair to regrow. You can calculate that your hair will grow about half an inch each month.

FOLLOWING INITIATIVES

To achieve a more natural appearance, you may need some surgical correction attempts after your incisions have healed. This can be in the form of reshaping the hairline with minigraft, micrograft and slit grafts. If you have had a flap surgery, you may think of ?dog ear? There may be a so-called protrusion left. After your recovery is complete, your doctor can remove it with a minor surgical intervention.
